Margaret’s talk will illustrate how the sport of hunting with birds of prey has influenced our language across the centuries, and is still part of our consciousness today. As an example, when a hawk or falcon drinks it is termed “bowsing” when it drinks heavily it is termed, in falconry speak, “boozing.” Falconry has crept into our surnames-with names such as “Hawking, Falconer, Bird” etc.
Margaret also says this about her talk: ‘ The idea for this talk, Hunting with Hawks and Falcons, was born some years ago, when Brian Rich passed his research material on the subject to my late partner, Eric Wood. Many of us remember Brian, who sadly died earlier this year, as one of History Live’s willing supporters. He gave us many talks himself, and brought the history of the local area to life via his coach trips.
Eric and I had great fun putting the talk together, but then Covid struck, and it never happened. I have had to alter the talk somewhat, with no Eric, but hope it carries Brian’s attention to detail [and dates! ) and my enjoyment in making it visually interesting. ‘
So what favour did Geoffrey Fitz Peter beg of King John in return for ten Palfreys and ten Hawks? You will have to come to the talk to find out!
