The final History Live summertime treat before the talks season starts in September, will be on August 23rd at 2.30 pm in Warslow Village Hall and it’s a real tasty afternoon delight!

A History of Cheesemaking in the Peak District with Alan Salt

In the past most farms in the Peak District made their own cheese – a strenuous task usually carried out by the women of the household! However in the 19th century cheese factories started to spring up – several within a very short distance of the History Live meeting place at Warslow – at Reapsmoor, Glutton Bridge, Ecton and of course Hartington among others. Alan Salt will tell us about developments in cheesemaking from these early days right up to the present time.

Alan has been a cheesemaker since the early 1970s and has extensively researched the history of cheesemaking in Staffordshire and Derbyshire. He is constantly adding to his knowledge and says that even if you’ve been to one of his talks before, some new information has recently been unearthed which he he is enthusiastic to share.

Alan will be bringing along some samples of cheese so we will all be able to enjoy a taste to help us understand how they came about. He is particularly keen to hear about any memories of local cheesemaking to add to his store of knowledge before the history of this important industry is lost – so if you have any photos, memorabilia or just want to chat about your cheesemaking memories then do come along and share with him.

Doors open at 2pm and the cost is just £3 which includes a variety of cheeses to try as well as our usual delicious homebakes! If you would like to contribute a cake please let Elspeth know (elspethjwalker@gmail.com or 01298 83282) beforehand to help her plan.
