Our first talk of the 2026 season, on Wednesday 2nd September 2026, is entitled The Salts of the Earth (a subject that many of our audience will know something about), as with the speaker. Netta Christie runs Discover Buxton & has been at the heart of much of the town’s history, sharing it widely, & previously running tours on the iconic red tram.
The Salt brothers were born in Hollinsclough and moved to Buxton as young men. Their contribution to the town of Buxton is immense but not given the recognition it deserves. This talk attempts to give voice to their story through the oral testaments of their relatives. In doing so the story reunites the daughter and granddaughter of the brothers and adds an additional emotional twist to the fascinating lives of two Victorian men, one of whom built the town and one whom unearthed the mysteries of its past.
